OUR EXPERIENCE - PHOTOS
Travelling in the Aegean sea, summer 2000 |
Travelling by ferry from Pireas port to Syros island was a lovely 3.5 hour experience with images filled with the cyan of the sky and the dark blue of the Aegean Sea. Despite the sunny weather, the sea breeze made us feel a bit cold. We definately needed a jacket, besides we had taken the early morning boat and the atmosphere was not so warm yet. Our aim was to photograph the island within less than 2 days! Not an easy thing to do. |
We first visited Ermoupolis and Ano Syros. We walked through the alleys of the old town and loved every minute of it. We then traveled to the rest of the island. Our base was Azolimnos village. This is were we had lunch. The tavern was by the main road and had a wonderful view of the bay of Azolimnos. The fish was fresh and the ouzo was strong. The snacks (mezedes) were very tasty too. Our room was spacious with a private verandah and sea view. It was actually a studio with refrigerator and kitchenette, which was more than adequate for our needs. |

OUR ROUTE : After crossing Azolimnos we visited Vari, Megas Yialos, Posseidonia (or Dellagraccia), Finikas, Galissas and Kini. The road was asphalt all the way, quite narrow at most parts with very close turns (90 degrees or more) to get to the villages. Like most parts in Hellas, all signs designating directions were placed right on the turning points and never before. This is why all tourists have to stop at every crossroad to see which way to go next. |

Approaching Kini village. |
Kini, sea view. |
Each village was revealing its beauty suddenly. The high mountains and the slope would allow us no view of the coastal area till the very last minute. The village of Kini was an apocalypse. Its beauty that suddenly appeared behind the hills took our breath away. Many fishing caiques scattered all over its bay, the white houses and the romantic taverns. |

The coastal road to Finikas village was very nice. The sea was rocky at some parts and sandy at some others. The variety of the scenery created a very relaxing atmosphere. The beach was calm and beautiful. Many hotels and taverns are located in the village and many fishing boats and small sailing boats in its bay. |
